Our story

Whitstable Unplugged began around a pub table in 2024, when a group of parents shared the same concern: smartphones and social media were increasingly dominating children’s lives, and the harms were too visible to ignore.

Since then, we’ve grown into a grassroots movement that’s making a positive difference across Whitstable and the wider Canterbury district.

In our first year we:

  • Launched Smartphone-Free Sundays, encouraging local cafés, shops, and families to put their devices aside on the last Sunday of every month.

  • Partnered with Portrait Theatre to bring the acclaimed verbatim play Generation FOMO to schools, parents, and educators.

  • Hosted community events and panel discussions, creating open, non-judgemental spaces to listen, share experiences, and explore solutions.

  • Led the first Canterbury Educators’ Roundtable on smartphones, bringing together headteachers and educators to work towards schools becoming smartphone-access free environments.

Whether you’re a parent, teacher, business owner, or young person, Whitstable Unplugged is here to support you in navigating this ever-increasing digital age. Our focus is on protecting children’s mental health and wellbeing.
